In these 15 years, REM has helped nurture and launch the careers of a number of film makers from the region, at least 8 of whom have subsequently made their first features; Debbie Isitt (Nativity), Justin Edgar (Special People), J Blakemore (The Disappearance of Alice Creed), Shona Auerbach (Dear Frankie), Chris Atkins (Taking Liberties, Starsuckers) among them. Some find themselves in other capacities of broadcasting (Michael Baig Clifford, Adrian Goldberg). Others continue making short films while holding down the day job; Nick Walker, Janet Vaughan and Derek NIsbet  integrate film making into the diverse programme of Talking Birds, Alan van Wijgerden is a lab tech for the University of Warwick, Paul Hardy, Mark Presdee, Matthew Cooke and Vince Lund have set up their own successful production companies. Others, still, got proper jobs.

Channel 4's Production Trainee Scheme 2010 is now open for applications

Channel 4 are on the lookout for new voices. Talented people who are keen to spend up to 12 months with either a TV or new media production company, building the skills they need to launch their careers. The important thing here is NEW voices. Which is why these schemes have been created for those who think they might never be able to break into the industry. There could be a hundred reasons why: you may be disabled for example, or from an ethnic minority, or perhaps you've never seen the inside of a university. Maybe you believe that your age could cause those doors to slam in your face. Whatever. The important thing is that you can bring ideas, energy and real passion. In return, we'll bring you every opportunity to shine.

A competition being organised by Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum will provide an opportunity for local film makers to show their work to a wider audience.

Film makers from the West Midlands are invited to create a short film inspired by Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum's collections, the Royal Pump Rooms building or Leamington Spa. The five most inspiring films will be shown on the Art Gallery & Museum's mezzanine level film screen in the local history gallery throughout the summer. Thousands of visitors will see the films and will be able to vote for their favourite. The film with the most votes will win the Best Film Award and £150 prize money.

Tammy Woodrow, organiser of the Museum Movies competition, said: 'This will be a fantastic opportunity for local film makers to get their work seen. We are hoping to receive some diverse and inspiring entries for visitors to the Art Gallery & Museum to enjoy over the summer.'
